Much of the chaos in the world today may be due to a changing paradigm.
The scientific rationalism that began in Europe and that has influenced
the rest of the world is giving way to relativism. Relativism is
familiar in Japanese culture, where it has been embraced since well
before the European enlightenment. But it is a new and uncontrolled
force in Western societies, where familiar truth is lost and new ways of
being are not yet formed. Hatred and xenophobia fill the void, creating
mortal danger for cultural difference.

Now is the time that interculturalists must rise to a new level of
expertise. It is insufficient for us to continue advocating tolerance or
even the value of cultural difference. The crucial next step is to
define a new form of consciousness that is adapted to living in a world
of multiple interconnected contexts.

This session will show how the dangers of relativism can be resolved
with the next paradigm, constructivism. Participants will explore how to
improve their own understanding of the new paradigm and how to use it to
guide intercultural education and training towards developing
intercultural consciousness. Specifically, participants will learn how
to avoid the “paradigmatic confusion” associated with many approaches
to intercultural competence and how to use the Developmental Model of
Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS) in more sophisticated and practical
ways.

Milton J. Bennett, Ph.D. is the director of Intercultural Development
Research Institute, a nonprofit located in the USA and Italy that
supports theory and research in constructivist intercultural
communication. He was also a founder of the Intercultural Communication
Institute in Portland, Oregon, has served on the academic faculties of
Portland State University, University of the Pacific, University of
Milano Bicocca, and the executive training faculties of Motorola
University, Boeing Company, Tuck School of Business, Stockholm School of
Economics, and Eni (Agip) Group. He is known for creating the
Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS) and his text/
reader, Basic Concepts of Intercultural Communication: Paradigms,
Principles, & Practices. Dr. Bennett has served on the advisory board of
Aoyama Gakuin University, consulted with Motorola Japan, and for many
years offered seminars in Tokyo and Kyoto through CCTS.
